Bushmills - Celebrating 400 years

Bushmills holds the oldest license for whiskey distillation in the world. On April 20th, 1608 King James 1st granted the Governor of Ireland's Ulster province, Sir Thomas Phillips, a licence to distil in the Bushmills area.

Today, Bushmills is the second biggest selling Irish Whiskey in the world and remains a community of whiskey makers, a village in the heart of Ireland's corn country where the distiller's craft has been preserved against all the odds in order to produce the original and best Irish Whiskeys.

It is the only Irish whiskey where all stages of production are still conducted under one roof, guaranteeing the consistently high quality demanded by consumers around the world. Bushmills produces a family of malt and blended whiskeys with a wide range of flavours, but all retain the same Bushmills qualities: they are sweet with a soft, pleasant mouth-coating texture - and they all balance depth with finesse.

History

Located in the heart of the Giant's Causeway at the most northern part of Ireland, the old Bushmills Distillery is truly a legend amongst distilleries. Over the past four centuries, the art of distillation has largely remained the same up to today, ensuring that all whiskeys from the Old Bushmills Distillery retain their distinctive taste.

Promotion

Bushmills is supported with a mix of TV (NI) and press advertising highlighting the wonderful fact that the water used to make Bushmills Irish Whiskey comes from the River Bush itself.

In 2006, Bushmills were proud to announce their sponsorship of the Irish Rugby Team, becoming 'Bushmills - The Spirit of Irish Rugby'. This fantastic sponsorship brings to life the passion and dedication that lies at the heart of Bushmills Irish Whiskey.

Bushmills blends

A unique family of whiskeys

At Bushmills, we think whiskey is made to be enjoyed. But different whiskeys match different occasions. So we make both malts and blends, so that we have a great whiskey for every occasion.

All our whiskeys share the same commitment to quality and attention to detail. They all start their life as Bushmills new-make spirit. The casks in which they mature are selected with the same care. They are all matured, blended and finally bottled here at the distillery.

But of course, they are made to different recipes:

Our blends - Original and Black Bush - combine our home-distilled Bushmills malt whiskey with tailor-made grain whiskey, distilled to our own specification and matured in our own selected casks at the distillery.

Bushmills malts only contain Bushmills malt whiskey.

Each whiskey is bottled from a unique combination of casks of various types and ages.

Bushmills™ Original

The cornerstone of our family, it's a blend of our own triple distilled malt whiskey with a lighter Irish grain whiskey. It is an approachable whiskey with a rich, warming taste of fresh fruit and vanilla.

'A gentle giant of a whiskey: lots of character and a soft touch.' Colum Egan, Head Distiller.

Black Bush™

With an intriguing flavour and a name to match, this is our special blend. It combines a uniquely high proportion of malt whiskey matured in former Oloroso Sherry casks with a sweet, batch-distilled grain whiskey. This unique recipe gives Black Bush its rich fruity notes and deep intense character, balanced by a unique smoothness.

'The perfect balance between depth and elegance. Full of flavour, but so soft it seems to float on your tongue.' Colum Egan, Head Distiller.

Bushmills™ Malt 10 yo

Triple distilled from 100% malted barley and matured for a minimum of 10 years in a combination of Bourbon-seasoned barrels and former Oloroso Sherry casks, it has aromas of honey, vanilla and milk chocolate.

'The heart of our whiskeys. The best example of the rich, smooth maltiness which forms the core of all our whiskeys.' Colum Egan, Head Distiller

Bushmills™ Malt 16 yo

This distinctive malt whiskey is aged for 16 years in a combination of Oloroso Sherry and Bourbon-seasoned casks, then matured for several months in port wine barrels - a unique maturation which imparts distinct notes of juicy fruits, nuts and spice, as well as a hint of ruby redness.

Bushmills™ Malt 21 yo

This rare single malt is aged for a minimum of 19 years in former Oloroso Sherry - and Bourbon-seasoned casks, then transferred into Madeira casks for the final 2 years of its maturation. The result is a whiskey of considerable depth that interweaves dried fruit flavours with spicy, aromatic maltiness and subtle nutty toasted raisin notes.
